The Best Christmas Trees For Small Spaces

The holiday season is almost here and for many of us that means it’s time to start decorating and bring on the holiday cheer!! Last year I downsized from a 6-bedroom house to a 3-bedroom townhouse so space is much more limited.

For those of us living in small apartments, studios, or houses with limited square footage, finding the perfect tree can be a challenge. I am downsizing my own Christmas tree and thought it would be a great time to share a roundup of small Christmas trees for others who might be in a similar situation. So, if you’re ready to get in the holiday spirit, let’s dive in!

Mini Christmas Trees

If you want a Christmas tree that stays on the floor but doesn’t overwhelm the room, a mini Christmas tree is the perfect solution. These small Christmas trees, generally around 3 to 5 feet tall, bring the joy of a full-sized tree into smaller spaces without dominating the entire room. They’re ideal for a small apartment, a cozy living room, a snug dining area, or even a small bedroom, adding just the right amount of holiday cheer without cramping your style.

Mini trees give you the look of a traditional tree but are easier to tuck into corners or place near a window in a small room. Add a few strands of twinkling lights, some mini ornaments, and a festive tree skirt, and you have a charming Christmas setup that doesn’t require too much room. Plus, these trees are great for those with curious pets or little ones since they’re low enough to enjoy but small enough to manage... as long as your ornaments aren't breakable!

Tabletop Christmas Trees

If you love the look of a Christmas tree but need something compact, a tabletop Christmas tree might be your best bet. These smaller trees typically range from 1 to 3 feet and are designed to sit on surfaces like dining tables, fireplace mantels, or entryway consoles. They offer the look and feel of a traditional Christmas tree in a size that doesn’t take up too much room.

Tabletop trees are also ideal for adding festive decor to different areas of your home, creating little pockets of holiday cheer without cluttering up your main living space.

Slim Christmas Trees

For those with a bit of floor space but still limited room, slim Christmas trees are a beautiful compromise. These trees maintain the height of a full-sized Christmas tree but with a narrower base, making them a stylish solution for small living rooms, bedrooms, or dining areas. Slim trees can reach from floor to (almost) ceiling without overpowering the room, giving you that classic holiday look without sacrificing too much floor space.

Decorate with mini ornaments and twinkling lights for a festive touch that’s big on holiday spirit but compact on space. They’re perfect for bringing Christmas cheer to tighter spaces without feeling cramped.

Wall-Mounted Christmas Trees

If you’re really pressed for space or want something a bit outside the box, a wall-mounted Christmas tree could be your perfect solution. These trees are designed to hang on the wall, saving valuable floor space while still giving you the vibe of a traditional tree.

Wall trees come in a variety of shapes and designs—some look like a classic tree silhouette, while others are crafted from branches or even fairy lights shaped into the form of a tree. They’re a fun, modern way to decorate, especially for small apartments or spaces with limited square footage. They also make a wonderful backdrop for holiday photos and are super pet-friendly!

More Small Christmas Tree Tips…

  • For a small living room, a slim tree is a great option. These trees maintain the height and feel of a traditional Christmas tree but with a much narrower shape, making them easy to fit into corners or tight spaces. If floor space is limited, you could also consider a tabletop Christmas tree on a side table or coffee table. Both options bring a festive look to your home without taking up too much room, allowing you to keep that holiday cheer in a smaller footprint.

  • When decorating a mini Christmas tree, focus on smaller, lightweight ornaments that don’t overwhelm the branches. Use a few strands of fairy lights or Christmas lights to add a warm glow, and stick to a cohesive color scheme—like silver and blue ornaments for a winter wonderland vibe or classic red and gold. You can even add a few small Christmas cards or candy canes as extra accents. This approach keeps things festive and stylish without too much visual clutter.

  • Absolutely! Many small tree varieties, like mini pines or firs around 3-5 feet, are perfect for smaller spaces. These real trees give you that fresh pine scent without taking over the room. Consider placing a live tree in a corner or near a window where it can stand out but doesn’t dominate. Mini real trees bring a touch of nature indoors, and with some simple, small decorations, they add just the right amount of holiday spirit to your space.

  • Tabletop Christmas trees are a great way to add a festive touch to different areas of your home without taking up floor space. Place one on your dining table as a centerpiece, on an entryway console for a welcoming vibe, or on a fireplace mantel if you have one. These smaller trees make it easy to add Christmas cheer to multiple rooms, and you can dress them up with mini ornaments, lights, and even a small tree skirt. Tabletop trees are also an effective way to spread holiday decor throughout your home, especially if you have limited space.

  • For tight spaces, a wall-mounted tree is a fantastic space-saving option. It creates the silhouette of a Christmas tree on your wall without taking up any floor space, which is perfect for small apartments or areas where space is at a premium. Another idea is to go for a slim Christmas tree, which has the height of a traditional tree but with a narrower base. Both options allow you to enjoy holiday decorations while keeping the floor clear for easy movement.

  • Both options have their benefits, but artificial trees tend to offer more flexibility in terms of shape and size, with options like slim and tabletop designs specifically made for smaller spaces. They’re also low-maintenance, which can be a big plus in a small home. However, if you love the scent of a live tree, a mini real tree (3-5 feet) can be a great way to bring nature indoors without overwhelming your space. Whichever you choose, there’s a perfect tree out there for every small space!

  • Yes! Mini Christmas trees (3-5 feet) are a great option if you have pets or little ones. They’re low enough to the ground for curious pets or toddlers to admire, but small enough to not hurt them if they accidentally tip over. To keep things even safer, choose shatterproof ornaments and avoid hanging any decorations low enough for little hands or paws to grab. Also, reinforce the tree by using a string to tie it to the wall. A mini tree lets you enjoy holiday decor in a pet- and child-friendly way.
