The Best Mezcal Margarita Recipe

As a lover of all things tequila, I have always been a huge fan of margaritas. But recently, I discovered the delicious and complex flavors of mezcal and my taste buds have never been the same. Mezcal, a distilled spirit made from the agave plant, has a distinct smoky flavor that adds a unique twist to any cocktail.

And what better way to enjoy mezcal than in a classic margarita? In this blog post, I will share with you my favorite mezcal margarita recipe and all the tips and tricks to make the perfect one at home.

The Ingredients

Let's start with the star of the show: mezcal. For this recipe, I recommend using a good quality mezcal such as Del Maguey or Delirio. These brands have a great balance of smokiness and complexity that will elevate your margarita to the next level. As for the orange liqueur, I prefer to use Triple Sec, but you can also use Cointreau or Grand Marnier for a more premium version.

For the sweetener, I like to use agave syrup instead of regular simple syrup. Agave syrup, made from the agave hearts, has a more natural and subtle sweetness that complements the smoky flavors of mezcal. And of course, you can't have a margarita without fresh lime juice. I highly recommend squeezing your own limes for the best flavor.

To make one mezcal margarita, you will need:

  • 2 oz Mezcal

  • 1 oz Triple Sec

  • ¾ oz fresh lime juice

  • ¼-½ oz agave syrup (depending on your preferred level of sweetness)

  • Lime wedge for garnish

The Process

1. Rim your glass with salt: Before you start making your margarita, you may want to rim your glass with salt. This is completely optional, but I personally love the contrast of the salty rim with the smoky flavors of mezcal. Simply run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass and dip it in sea salt or margarita salt.

2. Shake it up: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes and add the mezcal, Triple Sec, lime juice, and agave syrup. Shake it vigorously for about 15 seconds to combine all the ingredients and chill the drink.

3. Add fresh ice: Fill a rocks glass with fresh ice cubes and strain the margarita into the glass. This will ensure that your drink stays cold and does not get watered down.

4. Garnish and enjoy: Cut a lime wedge and place it on the side of the glass for a pop of color. Take a sip and enjoy the perfect balance of flavors in your mezcal margarita!

The Spicy Mezcal Margarita

If you are a fan of spicy drinks, then you must try the spicy mezcal margarita. To make this version, simply add a touch of jalapeño peppers to the cocktail shaker and muddle them before adding the rest of the ingredients. You can also make a spicy salt rim by mixing chili powder and sea salt. This version of the mezcal margarita is perfect for those who like a little kick in their drink.

The Frozen Mezcal Margarita

On a hot summer day, nothing beats a frozen margarita. And guess what? You can also make a frozen version of the mezcal margarita. Just blend all the ingredients with ice until smooth and pour into a frosty glass. This refreshing cocktail is perfect for Cinco de Mayo celebrations or a fun happy hour with friends.

Fun Fact: The Difference between Mezcal and Tequila

Many people confuse mezcal with its more popular cousin, tequila. While both are made from the agave plant, there are some key differences between the two. Tequila is made from the blue agave plant and can only be produced in the Mexican state of Jalisco.

Mezcal, on the other hand, can be made from different types of agave plants and is produced in several Mexican states. The most notable difference between the two is the smoky flavor of mezcal, which comes from the traditional production process of roasting the agave hearts in clay pots.

Other Mezcal Cocktails to Try

If you love the smoky flavor of mezcal, here are some other mezcal cocktails you should definitely try:

1. Mezcal Margarita: The smoky spin on a traditional margarita.

2. Mezcal Negroni: A mezcal version of the classic Negroni cocktail.

3. Mezcal Mule: A spicy and smoky twist on the classic Moscow Mule.

4. Mezcal Paloma: A refreshing cocktail made with mezcal, grapefruit juice, and club soda.

5. Mezcal Sour: A delicious blend of mezcal, fresh citrus juice, and a touch of sweetness.

Exploring Different Brands of Triple Sec

While Triple Sec is the most commonly used orange liqueur in margarita recipes, there are other brands you can try for a different flavor profile. Some popular brands of Triple Sec include Cointreau, Grand Marnier, and Combier. Each brand has its own unique taste, so feel free to experiment and see which one you like best in your margarita.

The Perfect Pairing: Mezcal and Small Plates

One of my favorite things about mezcal is how well it pairs with food. The smoky notes of mezcal complement a variety of dishes, making it the perfect drink to enjoy with a small plate. Some delicious options to pair with your mezcal margarita include grilled meats, spicy dishes, and anything with a touch of smokiness.

The mezcal margarita is a delicious and complex cocktail that is perfect for any occasion. Whether you prefer a classic margarita or a spicy version, this drink is sure to become your new favorite. So next time you're in the mood for a refreshing and smoky drink, give this mezcal margarita recipe a try. Cheers to delicious drinks and good times!
